Peter George

Has anyone some information about this author? He was a hardboiled
writer seemingly active in the late fifties or the early sixties, and
wrote at least one (excellent) P.I. novel - "Cool Murder" - which I
just read and enjoyed quite a lot. His shamus, Steven Bryant,
operating in the fictional californian megapole Pacific City, reminds
a lot of Travis McGee though he apparently predated him. The plot, on
the other hand, is reminiscent of the other MacDonald - Ross, with
many convolutions and crooked family relationships at the core. Alas,
I Couldn't find any information on the web about either the book, the
author or the protagonist; even ThrillingDetective has nothing on
them. I think Peter George is a pseudonym as it is very difficult for
me to believe that such a good book was written by an obscure hack.
Can someone help me to solve that mystery? Barry, maybe?

Friendly,
Xavier

Re: Peter George

I've never read any of Peter George's books. He is best known as the author
of "Red Alert", the atomic war novel that is the source of Kubrick's film "Dr.
Strangelove". He used "Peter Bryant" as this book's pseudonym.
Hubin's bibilography gives the dates of Peter (Bryant) George (1924 - 1966).
As Peter George:

Come Blond, Come Murder (52)
Pattern of Death (54)
Cool Murder (58)
The Final Steal (62)
Commander-1 (65)

As Bryan Peters:

Hong Kong Kill (58)
The Big H (61)
Sons of Nipon (61).

Unfortunately, Xavier, I can't help you with this one. I've never
heard of Peter George. From your description of COOL MURDER, I wish I had.
