As I think I mentioned before, I intend to reread all of these novels very soon, probably this summer, so I can't speak definitively, but I remember that the first time I read (most of) EC's novels, this was up there with Love Lies Bleeding and The Moving Toyshop for me. (I remember finding Holy Disorders way too long, but I was younger then.)

This one is excellent! It is very different from the early novels, in that it is very sober, not a farce, and that Professor Fen is very much in the background, but as a mystery novel it works splendidly.
