The Problem of the Wire
Cage
Bantam 304 (1948)
Synopsis:
Brenda found one set of footprints in the wet clay of the tennis court. They started at
the wire door, went out to the center... and stopped, stopped where the twisted mass that
had been a man lay dead. One set of footprints going out, and none coming back...
Twenty feet from the nearest side of the wire cage, Frank Dorrance had been strangled
with his own scarf. He lay on his back in the mud now, no longer able to harm the people
who hated him. One set of footprints going out, and none coming back...
At least four people were better off for Frank's death, and of them all, Brenda had
gained the most. She stared at the broken figure out there on the tennis court, and then
she ran... the wrong way. And there were two sets of footprints going out, and only
one coming back.
That's how Hugh found the wire cage - Brenda's prints came back; Frank's didn't. But
Brenda hadn't done it. She said she hadn't done it... she couldn't have done it...
